The Future of Chelsea Market

The Chelsea neighborhood is emerging as one of the city's most dynamic districts for technology and media businesses. To meet growing needs in the area, and reinforce Chelsea Market's role as the engine of the neighborhood's development, Chelsea Market owner Jamestown has planned an expansion along its 9th and 10th Avenue corridors. The plans include the following:

  • New office space on the west side of the market, along 10th Avenue
  • A new boutique hotel at the southwest corner of 9th Avenue and 16th Street
  • Provisions to support the High Line, including new amenities such as public restrooms, gathering spaces and new freight elevators

The proposed expansion would achieve the following:

  • Create as many as 1,200 new full-time jobs
  • Add new, high-quality office space within New York's most dynamic emerging technology and media corridor
  • Ensure continuity for Chelsea Market's beloved ground-floor concourse, and the best-in-class retailers who populate it

To begin the expansion, zoning changes must be enacted that would conform the Market to the requirements of the Special West Chelsea District, created in 2005 to guide development in West Chelsea and along the High Line.
